Tribute to Tito Puente

Lucas van Merwijk & his Cubop City Big Band

Cubop City Big Band

Tribute to The King of Latin Music, Tito Puente!

Google the words “King of Latin Music” and more than 3 million web pages will tell you that only one man truly deserves this majestic title: Tito Puente!

This celebrated master percussionist and big band leader was already playing salsa before the music even had that name. With his razor-sharp timbale solos and irresistible energy, he reached audiences worldwide in a career that exploded during the Mambo era and went on for more than 50 years, producing 110 albums and thousands of concerts.

Besides his groundbreaking work as a percussionist, The King was also a gifted arranger, a virtuoso showman, and both famous and notorious for his fiery outbursts as a bandleader.

No wonder then, that all this provides Europe’s number one salsa big band with the perfect reason to pay tribute to this legend—while at the same time presenting his work in a fresh perspective.

To make this vibrant celebration complete, bandleader Lucas van Merwijk is bringing over a near-legend in his own right from New York especially for the occasion: master bassist Andy Gonzalez, who himself was part of Tito Puente’s Golden Men of Latin Jazz.

The Cubop City Big Band has been led for over thirteen years by the award-winning Lucas van Merwijk. Their CDs are widely pirated in South America—the biggest compliment a European orchestra can receive!

“…Absolutely Top Notch! It will be hard to top this!…” – Salsa Power
“…Visitors who were captivated by ‘The Latin Vocal Explosion’ and the Buena Vista Social Club should not miss this!…” – Casa Latina, NY
